Arulmigu ThiruMoorthy Temple - ThiruMoorthy Hills ( Coimbatore)

by Ram |

It is believed that a few thousand years ago Athari Maharishi along with his wife Anushiya devi lived here. Moved by their prayer, Lord Shiva together with Brammah and Vishnu (Thiru Moorthigal) came in disguise to test their devotion. Overwhelmed by their appearance the couple offered them tribute. The Thiru Moorthigal refused to accept their offerings as such and demanded that the offering should be made by Anushiya devi in nudity. She accepted their demand and with her power of devotion she changed the Thiru Moorthi's into 3 years old babies and fed them. On seeing the power of devoting Anushiya devi, the Thiru Moorthi's blessed the couple and hence the place is known as Thiru Moorthi hills.

Arulmigu Easwarar Karuppasamy Kuladeivam Thirukoil - Sowripalayam - Coimbatore

by Ram |

Lord Easwarar - Karuppusamy temple, located at Sowripalayam, Coimbatore District in Tamilnadu, was built by 14 sub-sects of Raja Kula Agamudaiyar, over 100 years ago.

This temple deserves a special mention that in South India only here as far as the information goes, a much beautiful statue of Lord Shiva has been made Prathista.

In October 1996, the front hall ( Mandapam ) of the temple ( 16' X 11' ) got totally demolished due to the incessant outpouring of rain. As a result, the roof of the Mandapam was thrown 15-feet away from its position. The people who witnessed the incident deemed it an occurrence of wonder and are of strong belief that Lord Shiva himself desired that the temple be rebuilt with new outlook and grandeur.

To Cherish the desire of the God, the Arulmigu Easwarar Karuppusamy Kuladeivam Thirukoil Vazhipattu Mandram, a Trust formed in 1994 to carryout several charitable activities, decided to complete this Herculean task of constructing a new temple replacing the old one.

The Vazhipattu Mandram ( the trust ) started the construction work on 23rd November 1996. Due to sustained endeavours and constant follow up action, the trust could collect donation from the public as well as from the members of families belonging to the temple.

The Trust, with the collected funds, completed the construction of the temples for Lord Easwarar, Karuppusamy, and Goddess Pachiamman, the Maha Mandapam common for all the temples, and the Meditation Hall.

The idols of Lord Shiva, Karuppusami, Kannimar, Pachiamman, Vinayaka, Balananandhi, were already in existence in the temple. Now, in addition, the idols of Siva Lingam, Umaiyaval, Dhakshinamoorthi, Sathyanarayana, Dhurgai, Balamurugan, Saneeswaran, Navagrahams and Prathosha Nandhi have been consecrated as desired by numerous devotees and the members of the temple. The Kumbabishekam was held on 9th July 2001.

The Vazhipattu Mandram, therefore, request your goodself to kindly consider contributing liberally, for the cause of performing pujas to the Almighty Lord Shiva, into the above said Bank account at Sowripalayam Branch of Indian Bank, by Demand Draft in favour of " Arulmigu Eswarar Karuppusamy Kuladeivam Thirukoil Pooja Account" payable at Coimbatore.

Arulmigu Sri Venkatesa Perumal Thirukoil (Melathiruppathi) - Mondipalayam

by Ram |

This temple is counted among the noted vishnu temples of Kongunadu. The Image of the lord is flat on the four sides and conical in the center. The form was first discovered by one Kondamanaicker a few hundred years ago (we are given to understand). The devotee once sited his cow shedding it's milk on a sandhill. Induced by curiosity, he dug it, when manifested the image with Conch (Sanguchakkram) and Disc (Chakkram) as well as Saligram and Chikandi (weapon). Inspired by the divine revolution he ordered a temple to be built up for Shree Venketachalapathi enshrining the form. Devotee's who have taken vows to make offering to the lord of the seven hills can fulfil them in Mondipalayam, in the event of their inability to go to thirupathi.

Arulmigu Thirumurugananthaswamy Thirukoil - Thirumuruganpoondi

by Ram |

The temple dates back to 9th Century. The origin of the temple is rooted in legendary antiquity. Soorapadma, the scourge of the gods with his retinue of demons, struck terror in the celestial world with his sudden depredations and campaigns. The persecuted gods approached Lord Siva and implored him to save their lives. Lord Siva sent Lord Subramanya with a huge army headed by the valiant Veerabhahu to destroy Soorapadma and his retinue. Lord Muruga accomplished the arduous task. But he was afflicted with the mortal sin of mass killing. In order to absolve himself he installed a Siva Linga in Thirumuruganpoondi and worshipped it. As Muruga himself adored Lord Siva, the latter assumed the appelation "Thirumuruganathaswamy" which means "Master of Muruga".

Located at 5 Kms from Avinashi on the Coimbatore-Tiruppur road.

The holy shrine is also associated with Sundaramurthynayanar one of the most celebrated saints of saivism. He did a pilgrimage to the holy shrines of Siva in Kongunadu. Now Siva,The Lord of Thirumuruganpoondi who wanted to hear the saints melodies, compositions way laid Sundaramurthynayanar, in the guise of a hunter and robbed him of all his belongings and disappeared into the temple,Sundaramurthynayanar's sorrow burst out in the form of soul full song expressing his anguish and chiding the Lord of Thirmuruganpoondi that his divine presence in such a notorious place was mere mockery. Pleased with the poignancy of the compositions the lord ordered the return of all his belongings. Having understood the divine purpose behind the prank, Sundarar leaped with joy and glorified the Lord in ten songs. This episode is celebrated as an important festival called "Vedupari". The great sages such as Agasthya,Markendeya and Dhurvasa took to severe austerities and worshipped the Lord enshrined here. It is said that Durvasa brought the "Madhavi tree" from heaven and placed it here.

Arulmigu Maruthamalai Subramaniar Thirukoil - Maruthamalai ( Coimbatore)

by Ram |

The word "Marudhachalapathy" or "Maruthamalai Andavar" means Master of Hills, abounding in Marudha trees. The name has also a legendary origin. A Siddha, overcome by excessive thirst and tiredness, sought shelter under the shade of a Marudha tree and prayed to the mercy of the Lord Muruga for a shower of water, which sprang at once as though by a miracle from beneath the tree! As water gushed out from the roots of the marudha tree, the Siddha leaped in joy, glorifying Muruga as the Lord of "Marudha" and "Jalam" (water) with the passage of time, "Marudhajalapathi" became "Marudhachalapathy".

The "Pambatti Siddhar Cave" is another shrine attracting our attention. It is located on the slopes towards the South-east of the temple. It is reported that a snake charmer who became a Siddha used this cave as his abode for meditation on Lord Muruga and attained "Salvation" here. Here one can notice the image of the snake on the rock not carved but formed of its own accord.

The "Marudha Thirtam" and the"Pambatti Sunai" are springs on the hills with holy waters for ablution and a dip in them cures a number of diseases for they contain Medicinal Properties.

The last kumbhabisekam was performed in the year 1997.

Arulmigu AranganathaSwamy Thirukoil - Karamadai

by Ram |

This temple is located on the Ooty road, 30 kms from Coimbatore.

'Thottiyars' clan of people lived at Karamadai. A cow of one of the thottiars failed to yeild milk all of a sudden. He found out that the cow was shedding milk at a bush. Enraged, he started to cut it and heard an exploding sound and saw blood gushing from inside. On hearing this, the other people in the village came there and found a 'Suyambu Lingam' inside the bush. Arulmigu Avinashilingeswarar Thirukoil

by Ram |

This temple is located at on Erode road, Avinashi 40 kms from Coimbatore. This temple was built by 'Sundara Pandiya' in the 15th century. The Sthalapuranam states that two boys were taking bath in a tank when a crocodile swallowed one. Three years later a 'Thread ceremony' was performed to the boy who survived. Though their family was happy on the occassion, there was grief in the family of the boy who was swallowed by the crocodile. On his way to meet 'Cheramaan Peruman', Sundaramoorthy Nayanar happened to pass by Avinashi and heard the tale. Moved by this, Sundaramoorthy Nayanar composed and sang for 'Lord Shiva' to resurrect the dead child. His prayers were answered and water started flowing into the empty tank and crocodile emerged from it with a grown boy of 8 years.

Sri Jayamangala Anjaneyar Thirukoil

by Ram |

This temple is 50 kms from Coimbatore and 6 kms from Sirumugai.

'Lord Anjaneyar' statue was built by 'Vyasa Raya' during Krishna Deva Raya's rule. The uniqueness of this statue is that it was carved from a single monolithic rock called Suyambu and it has a distinct posture. On the right of 'Lord Anjaneyar' is 'Lord Vinayaka' and 'Nandi', also carved on the same rock. On the pivot side of 'Lord Vinayaga' are carvings of Kamadenu shedding milk on 'Lingam'.

According to the epic, 'Lord Rama' requested 'Lord Anjaneya' to get a 'Lingam' to do pooja. On 'Lord Anjaneya' not returning for a long time, 'Lord Rama' made a 'Suyambu Lingeswarar' himself. Returning with a 'Lingam', 'Lord Anjaneya' made a futile attempt to uprooot the lingam made by 'Lord Rama' and put the Lingam he brought in place. Subsequently, he placed it beside 'Suyambu Lingeswarar'.
