The Koniamman temple is located near the Townhall, Coimbatore. Built by the 'Irula' community in the 13th century. Coimbatore, earlier called 'Covanputhur' gets its name from the leader of this clan 'Covan'. Later, a fort was built around the Koniamman Temple by Illangosar tribe, fearing the invasion of Cheras. The deity was named 'Koni Amman'. During the rule of the Mysore dynasty, one of the kings renovated the temple and consecrated the 'Devi KoniAmman' in the style of 'Mahisasuramardhini'.
